The temporary digital consumption boom of the pandemic gave way to an inflationary landscape fuelled by global supply chain issues and geopolitical crises. While inflation levelled out in 2023, the residual effects of post-pandemic economics continued to reverberate throughout media and tech. The pandemic boom helped global podcast revenue grow by 53.3% and global podcast users increase by 45.6% from 2019 to 2020. The following year saw even more growth, with revenue rising by 80.6% and users by 53.9%. Podcast growth has since slowed relative to the pandemic boost, but remained healthy, especially amidst economic turbulence. From 2022 to 2023, global podcast revenue grew by 36.7% and the number of users increased by 23.4%. 2023 was nonetheless an uncertain time for the podcast industry, with marketing and advertising budget cuts contributing to layoffs and cancellations at major podcasting players like Spotify and NPR. While growth may be levelling out year over year, this is to be expected as global revenue and users increase. Moreover, there is much further growth to be had.
