[LONDON, March 18, 2025] — MIDiA Research has launched a new global survey aimed at uncovering the real-world experiences, income challenges, and career needs of songwriters — the creative forces behind today’s music industry.

Building on the success of last year’s groundbreaking Songwriters take the stage’ report — the first-ever survey of more than 300 global songwriters — this new study will provide deeper insights into how songwriters are diversifying their revenue streams beyond royalties; how social media factors into their careers; their most-requested tools and services; and more.

Key Findings from Last Year’s Study

The 2024 report revealed critical data about the state of songwriting, including:

  • 67% of songwriters identified a "lack of meaningful streaming income" as their biggest challenge and it was the top challenge regardless of income level or career stage
  • Songwriters are increasingly diversifying income streams, relying less on royalties and more on upfront revenue like works for hire and in-studio fees
  • Nearly 25% of songwriters said "building a social media following" was a top career goal, highlighting the growing importance of brand development even for behind-the-scenes creatives
  • Greater knowledge of the music publishing business directly correlates to higher income, underscoring the need for better education and resources
